Takeaways from 2024πŸ’‘

I recently went through all my notes from webinars, conferences, trainings or meetings I attended in the past year or so. Sometimes my notes are just gibberish. Occasionally there is a tidbit or two worth highlighting.Β

Here’s a few of my favorites takeaways:.

Hook readers in 111 words.
Attention spans are waning. Last I read, a human attention span is 8.25 seconds and 111 words. 111 words? What does that mean? People stop reading emails after 111 words. So far, this blog post is 90 words, including the headline. By the time you reach the end of this sentence, you have hit 108 words. Are your readers hooked?

Time of day matters.
A “first thing in the morning” email captures three to four precious minutes of reading time. A midday email? Make it snappy – you’ve got 12 seconds. The average time people take to read your email? Nine seconds. 😱
➑️ Bonus tip: Resend your. newsletter on Sunday to those who have not opened it.

Generalists > Specialists.
Successful people have one thing in common: a variety of experiences. The best athletes played several sports before specializing in one. Innovative business leaders worked in a variety of departments. Creative artists changed jobs often. It’s not how smart you are, it’s the accumulation of a toolkit. Generalists are more successful than specialists. More about generalists here.

Be ready for tech crises
🚨Warning: Suspicious activity detected! Organizations are more apt to experience a crisis involving a security issue, data breach, or ransom attack than any other type of crisis. Be ready.

Diminish controversy
When customers or members demand to know your organization’s stance on a contentious issue, their concern may stem from fear, uncertainty and doubt. Deescalate the situation by addressing the uncertainty and focus on solving their problems.
