My grandmother turned 100 this year, and when you make it to be a century old, the Governor throws you and all your 100-year-old friends a party. The Governor asked the 15 Centenarians what their secret was to to a long life.
My grandma said eat fruits and vegetables. Good advice, but what she didn’t say is that she also does a crossword puzzle every day and plays scrabble (a lot). Although she didn’t mention keeping your mind active, I’m pretty sure that has something to do with it too.
Crosswords…Sudoku…Word Finds. They are all great choices for extending your life, sources say. Taking a class, learning a new skill or simply writing in a journal will do the same thing…expand your mind and could even improve your memory.
One person said have a purpose in life. I’ve heard that before. It doesn’t matter what the purpose is…but just that you have one.
It can be as simple as taking care of a pet. Or checking on a neighbor every day or every week. It doesn’t even have to involve people or animals. A goal of knitting a baby blanket every month to give to a sick child is a purpose. Reading all the books on the New York Times bestseller list is another.
Although I still have many years ahead of me (60 to be exact if I make it to be a centenarian), this blog keeps my mind active and my purpose now is to help my husband raise our boys into healthy, responsible and happy adults. Oh, and try to have a little fun while we’re at it.
What will you do to live to be 100 years old?
