Jill of all Trades, Master of None

After 15 years in the PR biz, jobs in both agencies and in non-profit communications, it’s no secret that public relation professionals must have a variety of skills. This is especially true in the non-profit industry and smaller organizations.

Sometimes I feel as though I’m a “Jill of all trades, master of none.” I know a little bit about a lot of things, but am not an expert at any of them. I know how to update our organization’s website, design a marketing piece, write a press release, take a decent picture, manage a Facebook Page and plan a special event. And each of those jobs I mentioned is a real job within itself.

Webmaster. Graphic Designer. Writer. Photographer. Social Media Specialist (New Media, Web 2.0 or Community Manager are other common titles). Event Planner.

It has been suggested that a PR professionals day is similar to the multitasking women perform everyday, and that is possibly the reason why the public relations industry employs more women. That’s not to say that they are not great PR folks who are men, because there are many.

But no matter your gender or PR function, it is true that PR professionals must be flexible, nimble and able to change direction quickly. Sounds like my days as stay at home mom to me!
