The sunroom ☀️

For years, we’ve talked about enlarging our deck. During nice weather we enjoy sitting out there, but it’s just too small. It’s also declining in support, safety and overall appeal, which makes sense since it’s been battling the Kansas weather for 20 years.

We briefly discussed doing it during the 2017 house reno, but at the time, our budget did not allow for this “extra.”

Fast forward seven years. We have to replace current deck. Can we enlarge it? Maybe screen it in so we don’t have to deal with the bugs? Can we go even further and create a sunroom so we can enjoy it throughout the year?

We contacted the contractor who worked with us in 2017, and asked for estimates for:

  • enlarging the deck
  • enlarging the deck and screening it in
  • enlarging the deck and converting it to a three season sunroom

The cost for the sunroom was not that much more than a screened in deck! So here we go…

September: The deck is cleared and ready for demolition! Hoping to be able to host Thanksgiving in our new room! In this picture, you can see a string of lights. They were on a timer and came on every night for a few hours. I loved those festive lights. They did not make it… RIP.

Progress…

Our grass got pretty torn up during the process 😞 …

Walls are going up…

October…

December – didn’t quite make the Thanksgiving deadline. 🤣

Fun fact: Small fans with no lights cost three times as much as “regular” size fans with lights. 💰

It took four days to air out the room after they stained the wood.

Furniture arrived – couch, table and four chairs. Sc and I had a few “discussions” about furniture before agreeing… we are still married.

Dec. 22 – pre-Christmas chores. Putting together the table.

Ready! Just missing some finishes touches. There is no heating and cooling and when it’s cold you have to turn on the space heater. We learned if it gets below 25 degrees, it never warms up enough. However, being in Kansas means it could be -12 and a blizzard or sunny and 60… so… 🤷‍♀️

Needed new pillows and blankets. Ali approves! The new room adds 230 square feet to the upstairs living area in our house.

We also enclosed under the deck and made it a place for storage. Sc was tired of all the leaves accumulating under the deck and having to sweep and clean them up.
