My new favorite holiday thing – attending the interactive “Elf” movie.
If you’ve never seen the 2003 move starring Will Ferrel, here’s your summary:
Buddy was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and grew up among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. His real father, Walter Hobbs is a cynical businessman, but after a DNA test proves Buddy is, in fact, his son, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.
It’s one of my holiday favorites, along with Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life and The Holiday..
On a whim, my friend and I decided to go. It was showing at the Wichita Art Museum and was a 21+ event. The description encouraged dressing festively… but my friend and I were newbies. We wore “everyday” attire and upon arriving, were terribly undressed.
People were into it. It was a “thing.”
We saw everything from holiday attire like green tights, blinking headbands and ugly Christmas sweaters to legit movie costumes – Buddy the Elf, Jovie, Walter, the elves, and even the park policeman. Before the movie started, there was a costume contest.
Each attendees received a goodie bag and instructions on what to do during what parts of the movie (throw “snowballs,” eat candy, dance, etc). There was a bar, snacks and glow sticks.
It was super fun, and afterwards we met Santa!
