The value of an open mind

I recently read Range by David Epstein who argues generalists are primed to excel by trying different things first, not specializing in one thing. His research shows that most elite athletes, exceptional musicians and high achievers all started out as generalists, trying several sports or instruments first, then narrow their focus later. You can read more in this blog post: Jack of all trades: In defense of generalist.

One of the key takeaways from this book is the value of an open mind.

A mind kept wide open will always bring something home.

~Range

An open mind leads to flexibility of thought and acceptance of new ideas, and is vital to creating innovative solutions. People with diverse experiences are drawn to collaborative work, while “specialists” sometimes operate in silos, fostering “that’s the way we’ve always done it” mentality.

To move forward with personal goals, organizational strategies or company-wide missions, change is expected, but many times, challenged. Individuals with open minds tend to achieve goals more easily, easing into change instead of blocking it. A person with an open mind finds value in just the opportunity to learn.
