#COVIDchaos – Christmas eve

An ornament to remember Christmas 2020, made by my sister.

This year, health officials recommend celebrating the holidays with your family group in small gatherings, wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart. #HappyPandemicChristmas everyone! 😷

Here’s the latest stats: COVID cases worldwide have reached 80.5 million, 19 million in the United States (more than 332,000 deaths), 213,000 in Kansas and 36,974 cases in Sedgwick County.

The first round of COVID vaccines hit hospitals December 15. According to an infographic circulating by health officials, it appears that our family will be in the last group to get it, hopefully this summer, unless Scott gets moved up because he is considered federal law enforcement. Health workers, first responders, educators, older people and those with underlying health conditions are all ahead of us “regular” people, as they should be.

We’re hopeful we can start back to school in “hybrid” mode (not full remote) on January 4, 2021, but health experts have warned that the Christmas and New Year’s gatherings could spike cases. There is still a mask mandate here, until January 9 and gatherings are limited to 25 people total.

Christmas eve, December 24

We went over to Oma and Papa’s house where we spread out at the dinner table and wore our masks when we were not eating.

On the menu was hamburger soup and potato soup.

We also had a veggie tray, Brussels sprouts and fruit salad. I was supposed to bring the fruit, but realized at the last minute I didn’t have much. What I did have was a little mushy, so the fruit salad ended up consisting of blackberries, an orange and a few grapes. We had lots of desserts to choose from including treats brought over from neighbors, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread and ice cream.

Before we watched the movie Elf, Papa alerted us to this unknown gem – the Star Wars Holiday Special, circa 1978.

And there’s a reason why we’ve never heard of it… it was probably one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, and we only watched 20 minutes of it. 😆

The boys also opened a few presents. Customized discs – one with Ali’s face and one with shredded cheese 🤣
